HAIR NIGHTMARES: 6 HAIR DISASTERS YOU CAN AVOID

October 31, 2022 4 min read

Bad Hair Day

There are two major ways through which you can come to experience a hair nightmare; problems that stem from styling and hair care choices, and problems that can naturally occur due to factors that are out of your control at any particular time.

If in the quest for better-looking hair, you subject your hair to harsh procedures, products, chemicals, and unqualified hairstylists, you can bring upon yourself a hair nightmare you won’t be ecstatic about. This type of damage can also be gotten when you try a new hairstyle you don’t know too well or that you did yourself.

These types of hair problems can be easily solved with one simple rule; do a lot of research and consult with a professional hairstylist before switching things up with your hair. By switching things up we mean trying a new haircut, bleaching your hair, changing your hair products, etc.

In this article, the focus will be on the second type of problem; the ones that can develop on your day-to-day hair care journey.

Keep reading and we’ll share information on potential hair problems to watch out for and practical advice on how you can avoid and fix them.

Split Ends

Split Ends

Split ends can’t be reversed, the only solution is to cut it off. This is a very accurate case of prevention being better than cure; it is better to not have split ends than to have to deal with it.

To prevent split ends and all the stress that comes with it, you can follow the following simple rules or guidelines:

  • Blow-dry your hair at the lowest temperature.
  • Use a fine-toothed comb to detangle your hair instead of a brush. A fine-toothed comb is more gentle than a brush, it won’t exert a high drag force on your knots, thereby reducing breakage. And don’t forget to always brush your hair gently.
  • Invest in a quality heat protectant system or products if you use heat styling tools on your hair daily.
  • Invest in a microfiber towel and never rub your wet hair with a towel. Microfiber towels absorb water more effectively than regular towels.

The best way to avoid split ends is to pay close attention to how you take care of your hair and the tools you use.

Hair coloring can also cause split ends as it exposes your hair to chemicals that can strip it of its moisture, leading to split ends.

Lice

This can be a serious problem because of how much discomfort it can cause, but it is actually simple to understand and deal with.

If you’re currently having problems with lice you can do a few things to fight back; use a medicated shampoo for lice, soak your combs and brushes in boiling water after using them, and check for lice and lice eggs for two to three weeks after the treatment.

Greasy Hair

This problem is tightly tied to your hair-washing habits. If you wash your hair more than 2 to 3 times in a week, you’re probably doing too much and drying out your scalp. What happens when you dry out your scalp is that your scalp produces more oil to compensate.

Sebum is the natural oil produced by the scalp, it is produced by the sebaceous glands and it keeps the skin on your head lubricated.

Greasy hair can make your hair look dull, lifeless, or limp, thereby difficult to manage. It can also make you experience dandruff, leading to an itchy scalp.

If you wash your hair too often, try reducing how frequently you wash your hair to make it less oily and greasy. Also avoid using heavy products that can end up sitting in your hair, making it greasy and dirty.

Dry Hair

There are a number of factors that can make your hair brittle, rough, and dry, namely hormonal imbalance, birth control pills, pregnancy, or using the wrong products for your hair.

Washing your hair too often can also make your hair too dry. Pay close attention to how often you wash your hair and make sure to use a natural and gentle shampoo when you do.

To avoid hair dryness associated with using the wrong products, buy sachets or get test samples of any new product you’re trying and see how your hair reacts before committing to a big bottle.

Frizzy Hair

Frizzy Hair

Hair gets frizzy when the cuticle (hair’s outermost layer) is compromised and moisture from the environment penetrates hair strands.

The sleek, shiny, and beautiful look we all want with our hair is only possible when the cuticle is lying flat.

Avoid washing your hair every day as earlier mentioned in this article as that can make your hair dry and frizzier. Also, make sure to use sulfate-free shampoos and cold water when washing your hair.

The tools you use to style your hair also play a big part here. Make sure to use wide-toothed combs when your hair is wet. Our wide tooth detangling comb is designed to perfectly detangle in fewer strokes than a regular comb so your hair remains defined and frizz-free.

Hair Fall/ Hair Loss

Our hair grows in cycles, and goes through phases of growth, rest, and falling out. So, it’s normal to lose a few hairs every day, an average person loses about 100 hairs daily.

Outside of this normal behaviour is the possibility of hair thinning and hair loss, which can be caused by factors like stress, hormonal imbalance, and hair care products not suited to your hair.

Since there are a lot of factors that can cause hair loss, it is best to see a doctor if you notice you’re experiencing unprecedented hair loss. Pinpointing the cause of your hair loss is a great way to start as the hair loss can be an indication of a serious medical problem that needs immediate attention.
