8 Ideas for Styling Your Hair Without Heat

June 15, 2022 4 min read

It’s a simple and known fact that heat is not good for your strands, heat from the environment, or heat from styling tools. Limiting your hair’s exposure to heat is a great practice to keep your hair healthy and free from dryness, frizz, or breakage. It is even more important to skip heat styling tools now as summer is around the corner. With summer comes a temperature rise, that’s why we love it so much because we can be out there in the sun and on the beach. But if care is not taken all that heat can be bad for your hair.

Naturally, because of the heat of summer, our hair is constantly exposed to heat, adding more heat to the equation with heating tools isn’t what you want to do if you want to keep your hair healthy and looking its best. But how can you keep your hair beautiful and stylish (with curls and twists) without using heat tools like hairdryers, straightening irons, curling tongs, and the likes?

Styling Your Hair Without Heat

Use Microfiber Towels

The most common types of towels are terry cloth towels - they are not ideal because they are prone to creating friction with your hair, thereby generating heat and causing frizz. Microfiber towels have frictionless fibers that absorb moisture from your hair without heat, helping your hair stay smooth and frizz-free. On top of that, they absorb water faster and easier than terry cloth towels and their smoothness means they won’t rough up your cuticles and induce hair damage in the long run.

Blow Dry on the Coolest Setting

Summer is already hot, you shouldn’t be adding to the heat your cuticles have to endure by blowing hot air to dry your hair. It’s good practice to let your hair air-dry to reduce its exposure to heat. You can let your hair air-dry 70% of the way and then use your blow dryer to do the rest of the drying. The key here is watching the setting of your hairdryer - set it to the lowest setting. What you’re using here is the air and not the heat, so the coolest setting will do the job and make sure your hair strands are not exposed to heat.

Shampoo and Condition Properly

Styling without heat to get amazing results is a journey, and it starts from the shower - your shampooing and conditioning habits and routine. Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners with little or no chemical compounds that might be harsh on your hair. You want to take the best care of your hair as possible to make sure it’s in good health and easy to style. Two great choices for shampooing and conditioning are our fermented rice water shampoo bar and fermented rice water conditioner bar.

Try Heatless Beach Waves

This involves towel drying your hair and then adding an oil or serum for easy handling and styling. This style tip works best with slightly damp but not wet hair.

  • Twist your hair into sections
  • Pin each section into a loose, twisty bun
  • Let the buns sit for an hour and then unpin

This simple process will style your hair and give it a beach-wave texture. There’s a caveat though, the waves won’t be as defined as if you use a heating tool, it will give a subtle rumpled texture.

Hair Braiding

Braid Your Hair

A very simple and easy way to get loose waves without using styling tools is to sleep in rope braids. This styling tip will work well for all hair types. All you need to do the next morning to unlock your natural waves is to undo the braids and smoothen your hair with some oil to avoid frizz.

Use Hair Rollers

You can easily glam up your hair with heatless curls using hair rollers. All you have to do is roll sections of damp hair from the bottom-up and use a bobby pin to secure it in place. Give your hair two to three hours, or overnight if you have the time and patience, to dry and you’ll end up with beautiful waves. All without exposing your hair strands to damaging heat.

Scrunch Your Hair

This is a simple and effective technique to use if your hair has texture and is naturally curly or wavy. For this tip, you’ll need sea salt spray to maintain your hair’s natural texture. Spray damp hair with sea salt spray and then scrunch up the ends of your hair, that’s it.

Embrace Your Natural Texture, You’re Beautiful!

Most times the sole purpose of heating tools is to straighten your hair or bend them into curls - force them into shapes and textures far from what they are naturally. When you take out the heat, you give your hair room to be what it’s naturally meant to be. You’ll get to know your hair. The more you know and accept your hair, the more you’ll know what works for you and what doesn’t. This way you can start your journey to keeping your hair beautiful and stylish without using heat or too many products that could damage it.
