‘No Poo Method’ Is Shampoo Becoming Extinct?

March 27, 2022 3 min read

Plastic Waste Shampoo

What Is 'No Poo'?

At first glance the “no poo method” sounds like a weird toilet technique it’s just a nickname for people who don’t use shampoo, hence the term “no-poo”. Instead, this method involves using gentler alternatives to shampoo, like coconut oil or aloe vera, or sometimes just straight-up water as a replacement. The theory is that by omitting shampoo, you’ll avoid stripping away important oils that are essential for the health of your hair. The wrong shampoo can wreak havoc, from drying your scalp out, to breakage, the 'no poo' system seems like the answer to all our problems.

Why It's Gaining Popularity

This method takes a kinder approach to hair care. Hair naturally produces an oil called sebum which is very important for ensuring your hair stays conditioned and healthy. But too much of this oil can lead to greasy hair, which is definitely not attractive it’s the reason we use shampoo, to get rid of it. It’s also an environmentally friendly decision as there is less plastic packaging waste.

Nevertheless, it’s significant to note that there is an adjustment period. Your hair is used to having its oils stripped away, and as you implement this system your hair may overcompensate by producing even more oil than it usually does. That’s why we advocate for some patience, let your hair do its thing and in a couple of weeks, you’ll be thanking it.

Alternatives To No Poo

Low Poo

However, if you aren’t quite ready to completely exclude shampoo, then you can try the low poo method. This process means you wash your hair with very little shampoo, think a dime-size amount for your whole scalp. Low poo also means you don’t use products with sulfates or parabens. Unbeknownst to most of us, these ingredients can strip too much of the natural oils from your hair, leaving it in a brittle and dry condition. Not only that, but it can irritate your scalp which is troublesome, especially for those who have sensitive skin.

That’s why we suggest our rice water shampoo bars! Unlike regular shampoos, our products are low poo as they are paraben and sulfate-free, so you’ll be left with beautifully moisturized hair. Rice water is also most famous for its ability to repair damage from the inside out, and its power to encourage hair growth. It’s an all-around excellent substitution for traditional shampoo.  A huge plus is that its partner, the rice water conditioning bar is perfect for co-washing.

Co-Washing

Co-washing is when you replace the shampoo and conditioner step entirely with just one product that can do both. Essentially, you want a product that can cleanse the hair while moisturizing it too, in this technique people use a conditioner to co-wash. Washing your hair with just a conditioner has tons of benefits, the main advantage is that you’ll be able to retain the important oils your hair naturally produces.

Another is that you can focus on nourishing and hydrating your hair, which is perfect for the winter months when your scalp tends to be drier. If you have curly, coily hair then your hair can benefit from co-washing, this is because normal shampoo can result in your hair looking dry and frizzy. On the other hand, co-washing allows your hair to stay hydrated, even during the cleaning process.

We suggest co-washing your hair at least once a week, but it mainly depends on the thickness, length, and amount of styling products you’ve used on your hair. Save time, money, and your hair by choosing to either utilize the 'no poo', low poo or co-wash method for healthy hair.
